The word Ayurveda is defined as follows: Ayus = life or longevity, and Veda = science or knowledge. Ayurveda is the traditional Hindu system of medicine written about in Vedic literature, which seeks to integrate the mind, body and spirit and prolong life by utilizing a comprehensive holistic approach. It is based on the principles of balance between nature, diet, lifestyle choices, herbal medicine, meditation and yogic practices and set against the backdrop of the understanding of individual mind–body types, temperament and characteristics, called doshas. Ayurveda is said to be about 5,000 years old. How old it is exactly is not known, but it is said to have originated in the Indus Valley in northern India.

Ancient mystics, called rishis in the Hindu Vedic tradition, travelled to the Himalayas with the desire to achieve enlightenment. They wanted to concentrate on their spiritual practices for this purpose. In order to do so, they needed to find out just what the natural laws of the universe were so that they could balance their physiology to keep their bodies from getting out of balance when they were sitting in meditation. They learnt how to adjust and adapt their mind–body physiologies to the natural laws of nature so that when they were sitting in the cold or in the heat they would know what foods to eat, how to protect themselves from infections, what breathing techniques to use and what yogic postures and practices were best.

The rishis developed a whole system of behavioral modifications to keep their physical and mental bodies relatively harmonious so they could get on with this task of enlightenment. In so doing, they observed nature and developed the extraordinary system of preventative health care known today as Ayurveda. Ayurveda is not an alternative medicine. It is an absolute system in itself. It’s extremely user friendly and approachable for the North American psyche, and it is a beautiful system of knowledge that one can use practically in one’s own mind–body approaches to life.

One of the best ways we can start to begin understanding just what those dramas are all about is by understanding something about mind–body physiologies, called doshas in Ayurvedic medicine. Once you understand doshas, you can actually drop deeper into this field of reality or awareness, where you are not so identified with your personal behaviors, not so possessed and overly identified with them. You can see these natural laws of the universe manifesting through you and expressing themselves through these three dominant doshas.

With this system, you notice that your personality traits have a deeper source than your own personal ego constructs. It’s a beautiful system, and hopefully, by the end of this evening, you’re going to have the awareness that when you start behaving badly, or when you are starting to have certain preferences or likes or dislikes, certain tastes that you gravitate towards or certain cravings, it’s not really you. It’s just natural forces manifesting through your mind–body physiology. If you pay attention to these laws, and if you understand them, your level of consciousness automatically deepens because you’re not the direct cause and effect of all those expressions. Natural rhythms are working through you.

Why do some people want to go to hot Mexico for a holiday while others want to go to the mountains? Do you think it’s just individual choices? There are natural tendencies in their systems that push them in those directions. When people want to go to hot climates in the summer, generally you’ll find they’re of the Vata constitution. They have a lot of coldness in their body, and so they’re naturally drawn toward warm climates. It’s simply the forces of nature acting and expressing themselves through them. Why do some people want to go to the rarified air of the Rockies? They are of a Pitta constitution and need to cool down.

Why are some people always renovating the house while others won’t move a chair? Why do some love sexual role-play while others prefer to watch? What causes instant attraction? Who is cheap and frugal and who is a big spender?

Vata is the coalescing of the elements of space and air. Pitta is the coalescing of fire and water. Kapha is the coalescing of water and earth. These are the three most dominant, irreducible, metabolic principles that animate and direct all of nature and all of life throughout the entire cosmos. These are the motivating forces.
